It's a new year [Jan. 7th, 2014|10:36 pm]
Somebody's Jake
Today is my birthday and although I haven't managed to make it out of my PJ's and into some adult clothes I have at least dressed the baby. I'm blaming the baby for my state of disarray because he has been hungry and clingy but honestly I could have taken one of the speed showers I've become so adept at while he was taking one of his naps (which seem to get shorter and shorter every day). It's been an amazing year and I still find it hard to believe that I'm a mom. I'm someone's mommy and we are parents and wow, life is never going to be the same.

My beloved Sarah Cat passed away this year. For 16 years she was my companion - as loving and adored as any human family member and I miss her dearly. Every day she met me at the door after work and I still find myself stooping to greet her occasionally when I walk into our apartment. It is amazing how large a place furry kids can occupy in our hearts and how empty that space feels when they leave us.

I know it's cliche but they say that when one door closes another one opens and although parenthood is by far the most challenging thing I have undertook (no one really warned me about just how difficult it really is) every toothless grin reminds me of just how rewarding it is.

Somebody's Jake

The tent was erected on the evening of the day they arrived. A big, dirty canvas smudge on the horizon of town. They trampled the frozen ground until it was muddy enough to stain the cuffs of trouser legs and the hems of dresses. It was an odd crew of travelers dressed in uniforms of penitent black until the sermon began and all appeared in robes bleached pearly white except their preacher. He stood on a makeshift stage in his preacher's collar spitting tales of damnation to empty folding chairs until curiosity brought in the townsfolk. Slowly they filed in from the encroaching evening; the soft glow from the tent flaps contrasting sharply the brimstone and ash that the preacher painted. All who entered the tent suffered from sick hearts. All sat slouched in their chairs avoiding the eyes of their neighbors and rue the words that crafted guilt from humanity....Collapse )

I'm addicted to Grand Theft Auto. Dear Lord, what is wrong with me? I'm a good person; I felt guilty about hitting pedestrians and running red lights and the like... at first. Now I casually mow them down with cars I've stolen from old ladies while fleeing from the fuzz.
This is going to require some intervention.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Hallandale, FL -- June 8, 2007 -- Gold City Enterprise LLC, Hallandale, Florida, is initiating a nationwide recall in accordance with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the toothpaste made in China involving:

Lot #777A – SHIR FRESH MINT FLUORIDE 9 oz UPC # 859750001023
Lot #777B – SHIR FRESH MINT FLUORIDE PASTE 9 oz UPC # 859750001016
Lot #777C – SHIR FRESH MINT FLUORIDE 9 oz UPC # 859750001023
Lot #777D – SHIR FRESH MINT FLUORIDE PASTE 9 oz UPC # 859750001016
This recall has been initiated because the products may contain the poisonous chemical diethylene glycol (DEG). DEG is used in antifreeze and as a solvent, and is a Central Nervous System depressant and potent kidney and liver toxin.

I've heard so much bad news about imports (particularly from China) and poor FDA regulation due to under-staffing. I don't want to eat/ use any product without knowing exactly where the ingredients are from - I think I'll start a garden.

Sometimes when I sleep on my stomach Sarah will try to sleep on my back. It is for this reason, I believe, that I dreamed a big, furry bat was attached to my back and refused to be pried off of me.

I just remembered I have a journal. At least, that's my excuse for now.

Things are upside down at work. Our sr. developer quit and left me with enough work for five people. The company found a replacement who doesn't just go by the title sr. developer but dept. manager as well. Now there isn't enough work for the two of us (most days) which means he does the development work and I do the cutting-and-pasting work. I'd be crazy by the end of most work days if I wasn't able to distract myself with music.

Also, I've found a little park nearby with a pond that I can circle during my lunch break. Today it's rainy which is why I'm updating this here journal.

Andy has been working one weekend day every weekend so I get most of the day to do as I please. Most days I wheel my ancient laptop into his cube and keep him company. The days I don't I fight with myself over whether to pursue some artistic pastime or keep my development skills up to date. I enjoy both and wish I could tear myself in two and then do both.

Last weekend I flew home to catch the high school graduation of one of my nephews. While I was there I made sure to spend some time with my grandfather. My grandmother passed away recently and although everyone felt that he took it surprisingly well at the time he has a tinge of bitterness now that says otherwise. I think there's a code that men of his time live by that requires him to be tight-lipped about his feelings and appear strong for the sake of his family.

I love listening to my grandfather talk and always pick up some part of the past that I never knew. When I was a teenager and lived near enough I would ride my bike to my grandparents house to visit. If I sat with them long enough they would begin reminiscing. Previous to that it never occurred to me that they had had a youth because for all of my life they had seemed "old" and as far as I knew, had always been. And so it fascinated me to listen to stories about their youth.

I knew then that they wouldn't be around forever and thought that I accepted it as fact. Now that my grandmother is gone I find it hard to come to terms with gap that's been left by a lifetime of granmotherly hugs and kisses.

Don't keep lilies in your house. If you care about your fuzzy friends don't keep any kind of lilly within eyeshot of them - they are very, very toxic. If knew this little tidbit Sarah Kitty wouldn't be hooked up to an IV at the animal hospital. She's had a couple of horrible days being force fed charcoal and pushing fluids and being sick.
Wednesday evening I caught her eating the culprit flower and very fortunately she promptly 'sicked up' the entire thing. I called animal poison control and was told that even exposure to the pollen could cause kidney failure within 36 to 72 hours and to get her to emergency services as quickly and safely as possible and so we did.
I spoke to the vet today I was told that tests indicate that her kidneys are normal but they need to check again this evening to be sure. We hope to have her back home tomorrow.
